Literally language-science, HolQeD (pronunciation: S) is the name of the quarterly journal of the Klingon Language Institute, ISSN 1061-2327. It has been published continuously since March of 1992 until 2005, and is indexed by the Modern Language Association(1). HolQeD uses blind peer-review and generally high standards of scholarship, and runs articles about the Klingon Language, not standard fan-fiction about Klingon culture. After 14 years of existence in bound paper form, it changed to exclusive electronic distribution in 2005, but this stopped for unknown reason after only two editions. These two which were distributed as PDFs are volume 14 issue 1 and issues 2/3 (one issues for two). That was the last one, published in June 2005.
Name
The word HolQeD was initially an invented word, as a compound noun. It was later canonized by Okrand in a letter he wrote to the editor of HolQeD(2). He acknowledged that this compound meant "language science, or linguistics." It created the base for naming other sciences. (3)
Topics
Several articles about grammar, interpretations of canon information or the Klingon language appear in HolQeD. Also reader's letters, interviews with Marc Okrand and information about qep'a' and qepHom. There are some topics that appear in almost each edition:
Almost each edition has a cover artwork, usually contributed by members and friends of the KLI. Most contributors of the artwork were Gennie Summers (who also drew the Klingon Shakespeare in the Klingon Hamlet), Gary Nelson and Sam Thorp.
List of Editions
When there is a reference to an edition of HolQeD, this is usually done in the form "Volume":"Number", for instance HQ 10:2 for edition no. 38 of June 2001, which was the 2nd edition of the 10th year. Another common way is to write v3n4p12 for "Volume 3 Number 4 page 12".
In 2009, a project was initiated to scan all the issues for publishing them as an e-book. That project was not completed. In 2016, Chris Lipscombe restarted the idea of transcribing all the issues for publishing them again as an ebook. That project is still in development (2019).
