Jeremy Cowan
Jeremy Cowan is a podiatric physician living and practicing in Chicago, IL, USA.
Biography
His wife is an elementary school teacher and his son studied Engineering at university. Jeremy is mostly Scottish in ancestry and his wife is of Spanish descent (Gallego). They are both fluent in Spanish. Jeremy has also studied a number of other languages to differing levels of competence, but English and Spanish are the only ones he currently counts as fluent.
Mostly, when Jeremy studies Klingon, he likes to pretend that he is a human studying an alien language and culture. But occasionally he begins to fall under the delusion that he is Klingon, which is generally when he uses the name
janSIy. He has occasionally also been called by the nick name
qamQel.
Jeremy joined the
KLI in
1992. Perhaps his earliest major contribution to the Klingon speaking community has been his letter that appeared in
TV Guide in January
1993. From that mention, a media frenzy was sparked and the KLI and the Klingon language got their first moments in the spotlight.
Jeremy was also one of the teachers at the
Klingon Language Camp in Red Lake Falls, MN, in August of
1993. It was at this camp that he discovered the talent of reading
pIqaD in mirror image.
Since then he has continued to be involved in the KLI and the Klingon language community off and on. He attended the 3rd, 4th, 8th, 11th, and 19th through 27th
qep'a'mey. In 2013 and 2015 Jeremy helped to organize the qep'a' in Philadelphia and in 2015-2017 Jeremy organized and coordinated the
qep'a' in Chicago. He has continued to be involved in coordinating the
qep'a'mey held in Indianapolis, IN in 2018 and 2019 and the online virtual
qep'a' in 2020.
Jeremy has served as the language coach for the Chicago productions of
A Klingon Christmas Carol in 2012-2014 and 2016-2018 (the play was not put on in Chicago in 2015, 2019, and 2020).
At
qep'a' 23 in 2016, Jeremy was awarded the
Friend of Maltz certificate for his efforts for the
KLI.
Jeremy is a part of the team that created and continues to administrate the
Duolingo Klingon course. At
qep'a' 25 in 2018, Jeremy was inducted into the
Order of the Owl in recognition of his work on the Duolingo course.
