Klin Zha

Klin Zha is a Klingon board game similar to chess. It was first mentioned in John Ford's novel The Final Reflection. The Klingon spelling for the game is tlhInja (1).

Name

The name "klin zha" – as it is known in klingonaase – gets its name specifically because it is "the Klingon game". In The Final Reflection it is contrasted with "hum zha" (the human game), which is chess, and "rom zha" (the Romulan game), which is latranculo.

Of course, this book reflects a culture that is quite distinct from the Klingons we know, so one might wonder as to what extent the origin of the name still figures into a typical Klingon's perception of the game.

Suggested Terms

The following playing terms were suggested by quljIb on the email discussion forum on 2014-11-29. Not everyone agreed with this usage, so the following is neither agreed on, nor is it canon.

1. The playing board che'ron (battlefield) is triangular ra'Duch tIQ as are the many "squares" ra'DuchHommey that make up the board.

2. The empty third of the che'ron is always designated "east" chan. This leaves the opponents having set up their pieces in either the "northwest" 'ev or "southwest" tIng corners.

3. The direction a piece moves is described as chan tIng 'ev joq or some combination of the two, depending of the specific orientation of the piece's starting ra'DuchHom.

A website(2) with the rules of the game has been translated by Roger Cheesbro (DloraH), where he is making some suggestions for the tokens to be named:

  • Fencer: yanwI'
  • Lancer: ghIntaq yanwI'
  • Swift: qetwI'
  • Flier: puvwI'
  • Vanguard: 'avwI'
  • Blockader: botwI'
