Nineteen Eighty-Four
Nineteen Eighty-Four (also published as
1984) is a dystopian novel written by George Orwell set in a
1984 London controlled by a menacing political entity known as Ingsoc or, simply, the Party. It is Orwell's ninth and final completed work. It was published in June, 1949 and has had a long-lasting impact on English literature and the English language itself. The book centers on themes of totalitarianism and the consequences of government overreach.
The book's copyright is set to expire in January of
2021. Eager to jump on the book as soon as it was available,
Jack Bradley (aka
DeSDu') began a
translation of the book in the early summer of
2020.
Translation problems
Some problems to overcome when translating the book:
- Lack of Terran political terms
- The issue of "Newspeak" (a totalitarian conlang used by the Party to control thought)
