Star Trek III: The Search for Spock

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock is the 3rd Star Trek movie, directed by Leonard Nimoy. It was made in 1984 and contained lots of Klingon dialogues. Marc Okrand created the Klingon language for this film, as well as some Vulcan dialogue.

After Spock had died in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, the crew of the Enterprise go to search for his body that might still be alive on the Genesis planet. This planet was used for terraforming by the "Genesis Device", of which the Klingon commander Kruge was convinced that it was a new Federation weapon and he was determined to acquire it for the Empire. Kirk stops him and steals his Bird of Prey, but has to destroy the Enterprise.

Klingon dialogues

Just like in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan some of the scenes were recorded in English first and later dubbed in Klingon. This explains why some words perfectly match the lip movements of their English translation, such as wej not yet rhymes with "wait".

1. Exchange of Genesis data

  • Line 2 matches the lip movement of "Ready to transmit".
  • Line 7 matches the lip movement of "You will find it useful".
  • In Line 9 and 13 the word jawwI' was a mispronunciation of joHwI'. Same for HISlaH for HIja'. These words were then added to the word list as an alternative. See unintentional vocabulary for details.

2. Kruge meeting the USS Grissom

# Speaker Klingon Subtitles

The phrase qama'pu' jonta' neH was originally meant to mean "I told you: only the engine", but it received other subtitles with a different meaning. See unintentional vocabulary for details.

"Special Collector's Edition" DVD

The following text is printed on the back of the "Special Collector's Edition" DVD of 2002, without any translation. This is the DVD which contains the recording of Marc Okrand talking abut Klingon.

# Klingon translation
1 Qugh la'vaD QIn pav. Urgent message for Commander Kruge.
2 qa'vam jan SeH DIvI'. The Federation controls the Genesis device.
3 qa'vam yuQ Quv DaghojmeH Duyma'vaD yIjatlh. To learn the coordinates of the Genesis planet, talk to our agents.
4 qa'vam jan yISuq. Take the Genesis device.
