More Information

Most Klingon lexicographers consider these to be two homophonic words, but historically, one grew out of the other. The "petrified" meaning is the earlier one, and "be a waste" developed from that, perhaps because once something turns to stone it loses any original use it may have had – though it may take on another use, of course. (qepHom 2019)

'an be petrified can not be used for people, except if they really turned into a stone for whatever reason. It's definitely not to be used as "I was petrified by fear". (qepHom 2019 interview)

The meaning of "to be a waste" is used as in "That's a waste". To use it in a transitive way (as in "I wasted the Coca Cola") the type 4 suffix -moH is needed. The verb 'anmoH then gets the additional meaning of "to sacrifice". For instance, if you send someone to a battle knowing he's not going to come back means that you sacrificed him. Literally, you caused him to be a waste, you caused that to be 'wasteful'. (qepHom 2018 video interview, see ➞ New Words qep'a' 25)
