This is used as "sacrifice", like when you send somebody into a battle knowing that he will not come back. The original and literal meaning is "turn into stone", because if you turn something into stone, it becomes useless. See ➞ 'an for details.
The meaning of "to be a waste" is used as in "That's a waste". To use it in a transitive way (as in "I wasted the Coca Cola") the type 4 suffix-moH is needed. The verb 'anmoH then gets the additional meaning of "to sacrifice". For instance, if you send someone to a battle knowing he's not going to come back means that you sacrificed him. Literally, you caused him to be a waste, you caused that to be 'wasteful'. (qepHom 2018 video interview, see ➞ New Words qep'a' 25)
