More Information

In Belgium, the main official languages are French (Walloon) and Dutch (Flemish), and a small group of German speakers.

The Klingon country name is based on the Flemish name of the country: België. Okrand's decision to choose this version instead of the Walloon might be that most people in Belgium speak Flemish, but also perhaps because the word ends with -ya', a syllable that appears in many names of countries and planets.
