More Information

During qepHom Saarbrücken 2019, attendee Eiko Streitz was complaining since the first day that many things still don't have a name in Klingon but there is a word for a pickle and that's ridiculous. So on Saturday evening, on the way to the bar, he asked Marc Okrand: "How come there is no word for submarine?" Marc answered: "Well, there just isn't any word for it, that's it". Eiko then replied that what's puzzling him was, that if Marc's favorite movie is "Das Boot", then how the hell is there no word for "submarine", while there is one for pickles? So Marc answered: "Oh, you are right. And they are basically the same!" So Hurgh Duj was born.

Later that night, in the bar, Zrajm pointed to a picture on the wall (which he thought was a blimp) and asked whether the word Hurgh Duj was the word for blimp. Someone pointed out that the picture was actually a submarine, and that was the word they were talking about, and Marc Okrand said that Hurgh Duj could also be used to refer to a blimp.

(reported by qepHom attendee Uwe Caspari in a message to Joanna Kozlowska, which she published on Facebook; Confirmed by Lieven L. Litaer, who was present during the first event described; corrected by Zrajm, who was at the bar situation)

It was later added that if it was necessary to distinguish, one could say bIQ Hurgh Duj (submarine) and muD Hurgh Duj (blimp).

A Hurgh Duj typically has a motor in it propelling it along. Its pilot can control how fast it's going (up to a point), where it's headed, etc. That's not the way a hot-air balloon works. So I suspect Hurgh Duj is not what you're looking for. You can probably make use of weSjech ba'Suq (which is a particular sort of balloon, I guess). Once the basket ('unwat, or maybe, in this case, 'unwat'a') is attached to the balloon, I suppose the whole thing could be a weSjech ba'Suq Duj. But I don't know if you'll need that for the story. Maybe.

(Marc Okrand for The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, 2020)
